Sunday 21st April saw over 50,000 people run the streets of London for the 44th London marathon. This is the third time I’ve been to watch and support runners and I swear the atmosphere gets better every time. There is nothing quite like the pure joy of the supporters and the determination of the participants.
There is a massive feeling of unity within the city as the runners all run the same route be they elite, wheelchair athletes, blind/partially sighted, experienced or first timers. Everyone runs for their own reasons; time goals, charity, personal challenge being some of them but everyone is doing the same 26.2 miles.
One of my favourite things is the comradery amongst the runners. I’ve read so many stories of encouragement, help and overcoming obstacles it really is heart-warming. In a world full of hate, fear and violence this is a beautiful day to experience. One day I might be the other side of the barrier doing my own 26 miles.
No trip to the capital would have been complete without the obligatory bookshop visit and I went to Foyles. What a lovely shop. I may have purchased some new books (obviously!) and now have Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, The Invisible Life of Adie LaRue by V. E. Shwab and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin on my shelves.
I also wandered round and found houses where Wilkie Collins and Somerset Maugham lived, so another literary link to my weekend. If you get the chance to go and support or run) the London Marathon, I highly recommend it.
